Once upon a time, during Roman Empire Lake Como extended North some ten kilometres more than today, up to Samolaco (in latin Summus Lacus, that meant "The top of the lake".
Afterwards Lake Como lost ground up to Colico and Sorico and left behind Novate Mezzola (or simply Mezzola) lake, connected with Mera (Maira for the Swiss) river.
Mera/Maira sources are located on Piz Duan in Graubuenden.
At the opposites of this panorama there are two of my favourite mountains: Sasso Manduino and Monte Legnone.

I always like your panoramics since they transport the southern athmosphere to us in the north! Cheers Bruno.

Hello Marco,
this is a wonderful work and an interesting description. I also like these two mountains and am waiting till today for a real Legnone Panorama (including everything from Genova to the Ortles/r). Do you happen to know whether it's true that the local dialect name of the Manduino is "Sass Manduin"? And of the Legnone "Legn"? The hut on the western rigde is called "Ca d'Legn".

very nice.
2011/01/28 21:35 , Danko Rihter
Thank you.
@Matthias: I don't the dialect name, but I think that Sass Manduin is correct.
Ca' de Legn means Wooden House. Legnone means "Big piece of wood". Actually the Ca' de Legn is made mainly of wood, but Legone isn't.
Dialect name of Legnone is Legnun :-)
There is a beautiful panorama on A-P of Giovanni Rovedatti did you see it?

Thank you, Marco!

Concerning the name 'Legnone', some say that it may come from the old old name 'Lineone' (that comes from 'Lin', an ancient name for 'water'). Lienone is 'big lin', so 'big water', probably considering the fusion of the big snow accumulations of the north side. Cà de Legn in my opinion is a word joke to express both the meanings of "Legnone's house" and "Wooden House". Anyway, there are other 'Legn' on the Alps, for example "Rifugio Al Legn" under the Gridone, but I think that here the meaning is related to 'timber'
