Location: Refuge de l'Aiguille du Goûter (3863 m)      by: Andrea Rolando
Area: Montblanc-Gruppe      Date: 13/8/2011
The refuge of the Aiguille du Goûter is the main base for climbers involved in the ascension of Mont Blanc along the classic and easiest way on the French side.
This refuge, dating back to 1962 and belonging to the Club Alpin Français, is situated close to the Aiguille du Goûter, the first ice buttress of a long ridge that leads first to the rounded Dôme du Goûter and then to the summit of Mont Blanc.
The current shelter, which is constantly crowded and uncomfortable, will be flanked by the end of 2012 by another shelter, currently under construction
The Tramway du Mont Blanc, a small cog railway, links St Gervais and the Nid d'Aigle station, at an altitude of 2372 m. From the train station a large pathway climbs up to Refuge de Tête Rousse (3167 m), then runs up a steep and sometimes dangerous slope up to the Refuge du Goûter.
From the refuge you can enjoy exceptional views of Chamonix and the valley of the Arve, the Aiguille du Midi, the Aiguille Verte, Mont Blanc de Tacul, Mont Maudit and the Aiguille de Bionnassay. Curiously (and unfortunately), the summit of Mont Blanc is not visible, because it is hidden from the nearby Dôme du Goûter.

At the following link you can find an other panorama shot from the same location in 2008 and later in the evening:
